Volunteer Opportunity: Helping self-isolating students get food

Thursday 08-10-2020 - 15:23

We know that right now, everyone is in a tough situation. Some students are isolating; this means things like food delivery is difficult. To support those students who can’t easily access food we’re creating a volunteering scheme. We’re looking for volunteers who can collect food from either Swansea or Cardiff for local distribution to those in non-university accommodation.

We’re working in partnership with the university: they’ll be covering university accommodation (on-campus students); the students’ union will be supporting those who don’t live in halls of residence.

We’ll provide you with PPE, we’ll reimburse any travel costs incurred, and you get to help people.

How does it work?

  • Students order one of our food parcels
  • Delivery is allocated to you as a volunteer driver
  • You put on your PPE (you can collect this from Hwb if you don’t have any)
  • You head to the relevant university storage facility
  • Head to the students’ home
  • You knock on the door and leave their food for them - all delivers are to be completely contact-free
  • You head home, wash your hands thoroughly, have a cup of tea and feel good about giving back!

I want to get involved

Great to hear! You just need these few things...

  • A vehicle (sorry no scooters, push bikes, skateboards, or hoverboards)
  • A valid driving licence
  • A want to help other students
  • There will be a quick Teams call to run through how you help, and you will watch a short training session on manual handling

To take part, email Union@UWTSD.ac.uk with your name, phone number, programme of study, and a copies of your: MOT certificate, insurance certificate, and driving licence.

If you are using your own car for voluntary purposes to transport medicines or groceries to support others who are impacted by Covid-19, your cover will not be affected. You do not need to contact your insurer to update your documents or extend your cover. This applies to all categories of NHS Volunteer Responders, including those transporting patients, equipment, or other essential supplies.

Expenses-wise, you’ll be given 45p per mile, and will need to keep a record of how many miles you’re travelling.

Deliveries will be available to go out from Tuesday 13 October, so get in touch with us as soon as possible!
