🏳️‍🌈 Welcome to our LGBTQ+ Hub

Find the advice you need quickly and easily.

Identity & Coming Out

The journey of discovering your identity is unique, but not one you have to do alone. Below are some great resources to help you navigate your feelings, understand new terms, and how to 'come out' to those you care about.

Identity Glossary

Pan, Ace, Trans, Bisexual - labels can be difficult to navigate! You may come across terms you haven't heard before, or not know how to label a feeling. Stonewall has put together a really useful list of terms around identity.

Coming Out

Coming out is a deeply personal decision - who you come out to, and even whether you come out at all, is up to you. If you’ve been thinking about coming out, it’s important to find a way that feels right for you.

Trans, Non-binary & Gender-fluid

This section provides useful advice for people who identify as trans, non-binary or gender-fluid. Gender identity is a person's internal, personal sense of being. Transgender, or Trans for short, is the term used to describe someone whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Non-binary is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity doesn’t sit comfortably with ‘man’ or ‘woman’. And gender-fluid is the term used to describe someone who doesn't have a fixed gender.

Gender Identity Support

Trans and non-binary peoples general health needs are the same as anyone else's. But trans people may have additional health requirements. The NHS is here to help ensure you get the care you need.

Changing Your Name

You don't have to follow a legal process to start using a new name. But you might need a ‘deed poll’ to apply for, or change, official documents like your passport or driving licence.

Student ID's

Students can update their name (and remove their deadname) on their UWTSD student ID for free. Jennifer Sargisson, Gender Identity Officer for Swansea writes, ‘It is one less thing to pay for during a costly process of transitioning, and it is so validating when you get an ID with your name on it.’

Mermaids

Mermaids is a charity that provides support, advice and guidance for trans, non-binary and genderfluid people and their families. They even have a dedicated resource for students aged 18 – 25.

Binding Safely

Trans men and non-binary people may choose to use binders to alter their appearance. There are do's and don't's to binding safely, and the folks at PinkNews have put together an explainer video.

The experience of LGBTQ+ people can be challenging, that's why it's important to use the support of your communities. Here are some groups that can offer advice and support for you.
