In the third addition to our ‘Conversations with Advice’ series, our adviser, Alice, sat down with lecturer Corey Edwards to discuss ‘academic judgement’. What does it mean? What goes on during the marking process? Where can students turn to for support? All answered below.
Academic Judgement is a crucial part of the university process, though many students may not have even heard of it before. So, what does it mean? In simple terms, it refers to the thoughts and decisions an academic (such as a lecturer) makes when evaluating and marking a student’s work.
"What is the number 1 thing students should do when they receive their marks?" - Alice
"Don't take the mark on its own in isolation. Open up the submission link, have a read of your feedback. What did I do really well? How can I improve? " - Corey
As we discussed in the video, whilst it may be disappointing for students to receive a mark lower than they had been hoping for, students cannot submit an academic appeal purely because of this. If you are disappointed or confused by the marks or feedback you have received for your work, we recommend you approach your lecturer or programme manager to discuss.
