"You can't appeal because you're disappointed"

- Corey Edwards

In the third addition to our ‘Conversations with Advice’ series, our adviser, Alice, sat down with lecturer Corey Edwards to discuss ‘academic judgement’. What does it mean? What goes on during the marking process? Where can students turn to for support? All answered below.

What is Academic Judgement?

Academic Judgement is a crucial part of the university process, though many students may not have even heard of it before. So, what does it mean? In simple terms, it refers to the thoughts and decisions an academic (such as a lecturer) makes when evaluating and marking a student’s work.

"What is the number 1 thing students should do when they receive their marks?" - Alice

"Don't take the mark on its own in isolation. Open up the submission link, have a read of your feedback. What did I do really well? How can I improve? " - Corey

Why can’t students ask their work to be re-marked?

As we discussed in the video, whilst it may be disappointing for students to receive a mark lower than they had been hoping for, students cannot submit an academic appeal purely because of this. If you are disappointed or confused by the marks or feedback you have received for your work, we recommend you approach your lecturer or programme manager to discuss.

Are there other reasons a student can submit an appeal?

Yes! There are other circumstances where the university will consider a student’s academic appeal. In short, these are;

  • If there has been a factual or numerical error in the published results.
  • If the student was experiencing mitigating circumstances at the time of the assignment that the university was not already aware of.
  • If there were irregularities in the written instructions of an assignment.

"We have a lot of avenues of support, and I highly recommend students engage with that, rather than sit alone and worry. We are very proud of the support we can offer to students" - Corey

"Say something to somebody because there is support there" - Alice

With results being on the brain for everyone this time of year, we hope the information we have provided has been helpful. If you would like to reach out to our advice team, you can find out more below.
