To avert catastrophic Climate Change, fossil fuels need to stay in the ground and no new fossil fuel projects can be financed. At present Barclays is complicit in the harms of climate change by financing such projects, including oil pipelines in the US, Tar Sands in Canada and coal mines in Australia, Indonesia and Colombia.

Climate change as a phenomenon has racist, sexist and classist connotations. For this reason, Sheffield Students Union have already banned Barclays, which owns 97% of Third Energy (the company with a liscence to frack in North Yorkshire), and has £15.6 billion in fossil fuel assets globally.

The Students’ Union should:

  • Support People & Planet’s Divest Barclays campaign
  • Have no dealings with Barclays regarding banking, advertising, sponsorship and recruitment
  • Lobby the University to cut all ties with Barclays
