Why did we choose books?

Our Black History Month Book Scavenger Hunt - which is taking place in all campuses - aims to broaden your horizons and bring attention to authors who don’t always make it into the usual reading lists. Some of these books are already considered modern classics, but we believe it’s important to think about whose stories are being told and how they help us learn about different cultures and communities. For example, Telling Tales takes traditional stories and gives them a fresh, multicultural twist, while This Is The Canon helps spark important conversations around decolonising your bookshelf.

We hope this scavenger hunt encourages students to dive deeper into the human experience through literature—not just to read these books and move on, but to engage with what they’ve learned and seek out even more diverse stories. It’s all about breaking down the barriers created by the limited perspectives we’re often given. Each of these books is a great starting point for anyone wanting to understand more about the broader human experience.

For Birmingham, Cardiff, and London - there are books hidden around campus for you to discover - and you'll get to keep them.

For Carmarthen, Lampeter, and Swansea, you'll find bookmarks in publications that tie in with the Reclaiming Narrative in your campus libraries - but you can't keep these books.

Why bookmarks?

In addition to the books, we wanted to create something personal and interactive, so we designed Black History Month bookmarks (which can be found in books and libraries across all campuses) that lead you to a forum where you can share your story. We’re asking students to tell us about a time when they felt empowered by their culture. This will help us better understand the backgrounds and experiences of our students, while also fostering a stronger sense of belonging here at UWTSD.

Sharing your stories fits perfectly with this year’s theme, ‘Reclaiming Narratives,’ and amplifying your voices is what this campaign is all about!

You can find the reading list here!
