Carmarthen campus club captains pose with the Challenge Cup trophy.
Friday evening (10th May) was our Colours Ball, created to recognise and celebrate the dedication, commitment and successes of our campus sports and societies throughout the year, from BUCS scores to RAG schemes to individual games. This was the first time it was held in our partner venue of Taphouse72, and what a beautiful night it was!
Students enjoying the delicious Sloppy Joe's Streetfood on offer
Laura and I, in keeping with the ethos of the SU, created an awards ceremony that was ENTIRELY sustainable – the plates, straws and even balloons were all entirely compostable, which is a first for us as an SU! In between griddled sandwiches, nachos and colossal brownies from Sloppy Joe’s Streetfood, the attendees took their own photos as well as had professional ones taken by Eleanor Goddard, a first-year BA Photography Student volunteer.

Hosted by Laura and I (with Josh T manning the presentation), one by one the captains of each respective team gave a speech on their time as captain and then presented the team awards of Captain’s Player, Player’s Player and Most Improved. These awards were chosen solely by the members of the individual sports teams and were voted on to declare the winner. The winner of each category is as follows:

We then moved on to the main event of the Colours Awards ceremony. These awards were nominated by both sports and society members, as well as the members of UWTSD. The winners were all nominated by friends and peers, and chosen by a committee created by TSDSU. They were based on a range of criteria, including quality of the nomination, the nominee’s engagement with the SU and their devotion to their club/society. These nominations and awards are as follows:
Sports Club of the Year – Women’s Football
Society of the Year – Dance Society
RAG (Raising and Giving) Award – Netball
Sports Person of the Year – Leah Campbell
Society Person of the Year – Nia Dudley
Most Improved Team of the Year – Men's Rugby
Challenge Cup Team 2019 – Women's Rugby
Sports Personality of the Year – Jack Smyth / Tesni Fakes
SU Colours Special Recognition Award – Robbie Humphrey

These awards truly represented some of the best from our student societies – with many of the women’s teams having players that stretched across two or three teams; also clubs introducing brand new players to new sports and hobbies, and societies integrating every type of demographic into their activities. As Campus President, I was so proud to see our students confident in their acceptance speeches, and support and celebrate each other’s achievements both on the night and throughout the year.
Llongyfarchiadau i chi gyd!
