It’s October, Black History Month in the UK. We hope you’ll join us as we recognise and celebrate the history of Black people month-long here on the blog and beyond.
First, let’s talk about Black History Month and what it’s all about.
Black History Month exists to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.
It’s an opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of Black heritage and culture (which often gets overlooked). As a Students’ Union, we’ll also be talking about racism, ally-ship and shining a spotlight on the achievements of Black students within the UWTSD community.
Here’s some of the activity happening over the next few weeks and beyond. We hope to see you taking part in Black History Month and celebrating with us!
Creating a safe and positive community with Vanessa.
Vanessa Liverpool, your 2021-22 Group President specified in her manifesto that she wants to create a safe and positive community on campus, particularly for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic students. Vanessa is already working with the University, and will continue to do so to achieve this goal.
Promoting the Students of Colour Liberation Network.
There’s no better time to join the Students of Colour Liberation Network. We’re specifically looking for student leaders who want to help deliver events, run campaigns, and grow the network.
Exploring African and Caribbean Cuisine #FoodFridays
One of the tastiest ways to discover different cultures is in the kitchen. We’ll be sharing a different African or Caribbean recipe every week in October for #FoodFridays. We’re making sure recipes are budget friendly and will include vegan and gluten free options where possible. Why not give something new a try?
Recommended Reads Giveaway
We’re partnering up with the university library team to talk about some of our recommended reads. Keep an eye out for giveaways for some of our favourite titles!
Microaggressions and Racial Stereotyping.
We’ll be doing a deep dive on Microaggressions and Racial Stereotyping. Exploring unconscious racism and how we can change our behaviour to become better allies.
Celebrating the Black Community
We’ll be highlighting some inspirational people and their words of wisdom on our social media throughout the month. We encourage you to do the same!
Black History Month #ProudToBe
We’d love to see some UWTSD students join in this campaign by Black History Month UK. The campaign invites Black and Brown people from around the UK to share why they are #ProudToBe.
