The Slow Food movement was started in 1986 in Italy by Carlo Petrini, but was not officially founded till 1989 in Paris (Slow Food, N.d). The aim of the original aim of the group was to ‘defend regional traditions, good food, gastronomic pleasure and a slow pace of life’.  Now the movement focuses on the interconnection between plate, planet, people, and politics. Alternatively, it is marketed as an opposition to fast food, with a plan to preserve the local and regional cuisine. The movement now includes millions of people across the country and the world. It took nearly two decades for the Slow Food movement to reach the UK. In 2006 Slow Food UK was formed. Slow Food in Wales aims to focus on ‘Good, cleaner, and fair food for all'. Within Wales the movement is split into four main areas, Southeast, Southwest, Mid and North. Being grassroots and volunteer led, the movement needs as much help as it can receive.

There are a number of ways to support the Slow Food movement; one way is to purchase a membership. The membership for the movement for an individual is only £3.50 a month or £42 a year, and families are £54 a year. But even without a membership, everyone can join in with the ideas of the movement and what it stands for. If you are an eco-conscious person, then the framework and mission of the slow food movement may be of interest. For more information, please feel free to explore the link below.
