Huw has been working hard creating the branding for the Inspire Interns Project, drawing inspiration from foliage with natural colours, organic shapes, and rough edges.

We’ll hand over to Huw to explain his thinking and process:

"When designing the Inspire Interns branding, the aim was to create an effective brand that can be recognisable across several platforms. The brand had to appeal to a younger crowd in an attempt to get students to engage with Inspire and get involved in activities.

I thought that a brand that is characterised by quirky and playful visual elements would be most suitable for this target audience.

I tried to visualize what the brand could look like. I wanted it to be distinctive and playful, which would encourage people to engage more. Green is also often used to signify eco-friendly and sustainable related design. I wanted to reflect that in the Inspire Interns brand.
I wanted to use a typeface that was unique. I decided on using Citrus Gothic Rough; it has nice curved and flicked edges, it also has a rough and inconsistent outline which I thought looks quite natural and rustic; which is apt for the brand that values nature and the environment.

I played around with the typography for the logo. I extended the ‘I‘ as both words begin ‘I’ which looks like an exclamation mark, giving the signal that this is a fun and playful brand as well as putting forward that idea of creating action. I also added a seed/leaf shape on the other ‘I’ to signify the brand's focus on sustainability. I did the same for the Welsh version of the logo. I also created a simplified logo icon which can be used as well, making the brand more accessible for different spaces and design.

I used a colour pallet of different shades of green; I thought a dark green and light green would contrast with each other nicely. Making it useful for making text and visual elements stand out. Green also has strong connotations with nature and sustainability. I also chose a warm, creamy white; I thought this would be useful for backgrounds for the greens to sit against. The warm colour also portrays the brand as friendly and approachable.

These visual elements are replicated across different platforms such as the inspire webpage. The aim is so it is recognised across all designs/ platforms."
