What we know...
- The University considers 1,250 students on a campus to be viable; Lampeter has 92 on campus humanities students
- Clarity around numbers of students on the site was gained in October, following the Clearing processes. The University created an action plan for the proposal from there. The University had not been planning this for a long time, instead it is reacting to the information it now has available.
- Your Lampeter Campus President will be meeting weekly with the team leading the proposal.
- In the next fortnight the University will open bookings for the tour of Carmarthen campus which is currently being planned to take place Wednesday 18 December. We encourage anyone who is able to go on this trip to do so to experience the Carmarthen campus first hand.
- It is not an option for students to remain living on the site if the teaching provision is to move to Carmarthen.
- Teach out’ i.e. students being able to complete their degrees on the Lampeter site is not possible due to; safeguarding (health & safety), the student learning experience, and the academic quality of programmes.
- A full impact assessment is underway to ensure all impacts are understood with the proposed move (i.e. equality impact assessment as well as impacts upon Welsh Language and much more)
- If the move is to happen then Student Services will work to support student employability through the creation of jobs fairs. The University also noted that there are opportunities for students to work on campus for the University and that the bursary framework is available for students (www.uwtsd.ac.uk/applying-finance/fees-finance/undergraduate-funding-support)
- In terms of accommodation: the University can guarantee rooms for all students who would be moving given current student numbers there are no concerns regarding there being enough rooms for everyone.
- Where students have expressed they aren’t able to travel or move to Carmarthen the University has committed to a solution, tailored to these students.
- A separate group comprising Quentin Drew, Rod Bale, Martin Bates, Thomas Jansen and Jeremy smith has been created to review requirements of any move regarding the provision of the Archaeology Labs. This group is liaising closely with the Estates and Facilities team
- In the next fortnight the University will communicate with students about when the meeting of the University’s SLT will discuss the proposal. Your Lampeter Campus President will attend this meeting.
- There is another student meeting on Wednesday 4 December in Old Hall from 2:30pm to 3:30pm (this is a repeat of the session held Friday 29 November as not everyone was able to attend)
When, Where, How...
As part of the ongoing conversation relating to when, where, and how - the University has provided some of the proactive steps they have taken over the last few years to help increase applicants to Lampeter.
- Curriculum changes to be dynamic (considering the Higher Education sector as a whole, the skills graduates need, and the academic discipline’s development).
- Major / Minors (like American Universities) with programmes like Digital Humanities, Heritage studies, Education Studies, with a unique selling point.
- Block system introduced; UWTSD was one of the first Universities in the UK to bring in Block teaching.
- Sinology programmes being a part of the Lampeter community.
The University has replied to our questions, you can find their answers here (www.uwtsdunion.co.uk/articles/university-answers-our-questions). Thank you to the University for taking the time to provide considered answers.
We appreciate for the University they need to make a decision in the face of the information in front of them. We appreciate for students they are interested in understanding who the University’s SLT is, we have asked the University to publish the names of its SLT. As noted above, Rhobyn, your Lampeter Campus President will be attending the meeting in January.
