đź’» Lecture Capture

Monday 31-01-2022 - 14:17

Students came to the Students’ Union and the University to ask for a more accessible approach to their education. The main want was for all lectures to be recorded, so that students could check back through the lesson or use the recording to catch up due to any unforeseen absences.

What we did

Our Sabbatical team listened to what you wanted and decided to talk to the University. Through a series of meetings and a little bit of lobbying, the Sabbatical officers worked with the University to create the new Lecture Capture policy and action it.

What does the policy say?

Yay! Lecture Capture is now written in University policy. This is great news, as now learning can become much more accessible and fewer students will miss out. This also gives more opportunity to review a lecture after it has happened; some learning styles are not supported as equally through a one-off unrecorded lecture, therefore it is important that students can revisit information taught to help with understanding and clarity of a topic.

The main points you need to know:

  • The University will aim to provide a recording of every lecture, as far as is possible and appropriate, in support of a consistent and inclusive student experience. Lecturers will record their lectures using the lecture recording service, except where a lecture cannot or should not be recorded.
  • Institutes will normally notify students which of their lectures will be recorded or not.
  • The University expects that lecturers will release the recordings to students within 2 working days after the completion of recording and post-processing of the associated data. Lecturers may alternatively opt for immediate release or manual release of their scheduled recordings.

You can view the full UWTSD Lecture Recording Policy on the University's website.

What Expectations should you have?

  • You should expect that if your lecturer has agreed to record a session, they will keep to their word and do so.
  • You should expect to receive an agreed recording back within two working days unless your lecturer has a specified date due to having to edit the footage.

What to do if your lecturer/institute are not following the policy?

  • You could raise this problem with your Course Rep if lectures are not being recorded at the course level.
  • If it appears to be an issue with multiple courses at your institute, you should report the issues to your Student Voice Rep.
  • If in doubt of who your Course Rep is or who your Student Voice Rep is, get in contact with your Sabbatical Officer, who will speak directly to the University about any issues raised.
  • If it is found that multiple courses at different institutes are not receiving the Lecture Capture as set out in the policy, this should be raised with the Students’ Union; you can contact the Student Voice team at studentvoice@uwtsd.ac.uk
