Liberation Networks - Appropriate Terminology

Wednesday 15-07-2020 - 09:00

Rebecca, our Union Ambassador, is helping to set up new Liberation Networks and needs your help. Here is her message:

Liberation Networks Coming Very Soon

New cross-campus Liberation Networks will be launched soon. These groups will be a safe space for members and allies of the group, providing support, activism and education. There will be a Liberation Network for the following groups of students:

  • Black students.
  • Ethnic Minority students.
  • LGBTQ+ students.
  • Disabled students.
  • Students who identify as Women.

Terminology

Members of these groups deserve to be treated with respect, and we want to ensure we are using the correct terminology. Historically, the term BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) has been used by organisations and institutions to collectively identify Black, Asian and Ethnic Minorities students. We want to ask if you believe this is the correct term to use?

In response to the Black Lives Matter movement, we're planning on having the following Liberation Networks, instead of the just one BAME network;

  • Black Students.
  • Ethnic Minority Students.

We want to set up these to best represent our students. That's why we want your feedback. Are we using the correct terminology, or do you have any suggestions? I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best, Rebecca
