We have been alerted to a scam that appears to be targeting students and in particular international students. This scam takes the form of contacting students by telephone pretending to be government officials, taxation officers, country embassies, the police, or the NHS. The aim of the scam is to get the victim to transfer large amounts of money via a bank transfer.
Students are encouraged to be vigilant, and to think before responding to contact via telephone calls or text messages from unknown numbers.
If you receive a text message, read it carefully, do not click on any links or give out any personal or bank details.
If you receive a suspicious phone call, do not give out any personal or bank details, hang up the call, and contact the company through using the official phone number on their website.
If you remain unsure, contact the Hwb for help.
