It’s Pride month 2022 🏳️🌈 🎉, and this year marks 50 years since the first Pride march took place in the UK.
We celebrate Pride in June as this was the month the Stonewall riots took place.
Reminder: The Stonewall riots were very important protests that happened in the US in 1969; these protests created a lot of change for gay rights in America and around the world.
Pride is all about equality, acceptance and celebrating the work of those who have paved and are still paving the way for LGBTQ+ rights, as well as celebrating all those who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community to be proud of who they are!
There are plenty of events happening around the UK for Pride over the summer; please make sure to check out our previous blog on these events. The next event for Pride that students in Carmarthen and surrounding areas could join in with is Carmarthen Pride on the 11th of June. There will be university staff attending this, so please go and say hello!
We would love to encourage all students who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community to have a wonderful Pride, and be proud of the person you are, and to the students who don’t identify with the community… show your support as an ally.
Keep your eye out for some student written blogs this month, and if you would like to contribute anything to Pride month at the SU, including campaigns to support LGBTQ+ rights… then please do get in touch with studentvoice@uwtsd.ac.uk
Happy Pride month all!
