SU Spotlight: Carmarthen Allotment Society

Thursday 21-03-2019 - 08:30

It’s #WorldPlantingDay today and coincidently we’ve just approved the Green Space for Mental Health (Allotment) Society on Carmarthen campus. We interviewed, Harry Bowler Society President to tell all about the society and how you can get involved.

Hello Harry. Congratulations on the new society and happy #WorldPlantingDay! First, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you study?

I’m Harry. I'm studying Outdoor Adventure after years of working in an office job in Cardiff. I have always had an obsession with the outdoors and couldn’t spend any more time sat behind a desk. I try to live my life as sustainable as possible and enjoy nothing more than being outside.

What made you interested in the Allotment on campus and why did you decide to set up a society around it?

The idea of being able to grow my own food and not have to go to the supermarket for plastic-wrapped food is something I have always wanted to be able to do but with student rented accommodation it is never possible. I want to use the society to give other students a chance to grow their own food and re-connect with nature.

What are the society's main goals?
We are looking to create a sustainable environment for the university and also tackle mental health with horticulture therapy.

Why should students get involved and how can they go about that?

The allotment is a place of harmony, where you can do so much more than just watch something you’ve planted grow, you can also help your inner-self grow. Being able to take food back to your halls and cook something you grew from scratch.
