🧘 Take the #UWTSDINPIRE 7 day Wellbeing Challenge.

Friday 14-05-2021 - 12:36

INSPIRE Intern Paul O’Toole is asking students to take a 7-day wellbeing theme challenge based on Wales Well-Being of Future Generations Act and it's 7 well-being goals to create a more sustainable Wales.

Each day is themed on a well-being goal. Click a section to expand it so see what Paul's challenge of the day is and how it relates to the theme.

"While we may not all have the financial clout to help with rebuilding and maintaining the various infrastructures to help Wales prosper on a larger scale; what we can do is look to improve our own personal prosperity. By helping ourselves, we in turn help build up the bigger picture. By building our knowledge of our own economical standing, we can then access it and take steps to improve it.

For today, why not start the week by putting 10% or 20% of whatever you spend in a pot and save it till the end of the year. Set yourself a time period, be it a month, six months or a year and do this every week. As we continue with these habits, we find new ways of adapting and improving our monetary habits. Share your ideas and see how much money you manage to save!"

"Is there anything worse than going to one of your favourite areas to relax, only to find that somebody has thrown litter all over the place? Nobody likes to pick up other people’s litter, but sometimes it is absolutely necessary for us to do so, in order to improve the hygiene and cleanliness for the surrounding environment to prosper. For Tuesday, if you see any rubbish which has been thrown on the floor, why not do a good deed and throw it in the bin? Even it is one piece and twenty people pick up one piece of litter, an improvement is still being made."

"For Wednesday, the goal for today is your personal well-being. Why not try ten to fifteen minutes of meditation to start your day? Meditation has been growing in popularity over the past few years, and it’s no wonder with the benefits that can be reaped from its practice. There are many studies that have shown meditation to improve the following: Concentration, situational awareness, emotional intelligence, and has even improved grades amongst students where it has been implemented across various levels of education. All this, and all that you need to do is sit down in a quiet and comfortable spot, close your eyes and breath! Give it a try this Wednesday."

"Nobody, no matter of what race, gender, sexuality or financial situation, should be hindered and should be able to express themselves freely. There have been many positive strides made in matters of equality, and the understanding of differences between one another. However, there may still be elements that we may not understand. For Thursday, if there is something that you do not understand, why not try reading an article from the perspective of someone you may not understand. For example, if you are women who struggles with understanding men’s troubles, read an article from a man’s perspective; and if you are a man who doesn’t understand the hardships of women, read an article from a woman’s perspective. There is compassion in understanding, and though we may not see things completely in the same way, we can make an effort to find the middle ground and at least take into consideration how other people experience these issues."

"It’s Friday and everybody is in high spirits for the weekend. For Friday’s task, why not go out into your community and have a conversation with two or three people. It can be a neighbour, a shop owner or even that person who lives on your street that you’ve yet to have a conversation with yet. The commissioner’s analysis shows that more well-being objectives have been placed on the communal well-being goal than any of the others. Particularly during the pandemic, many people have found themselves isolated and disconnected from their friends and family. Do your part to help in rebuilding a cohesive and well-connected community and prepare more seats for the post COVID party!"

"A thriving culture is massively important as it gives a sense of communal identity, and our heritage is that which we feel is of value and is worth preserving for the future. Particularly in the wake of the pandemic, local and family business owners may be succumbing to the strain of financial difficulties in these unprecedented times. For Saturday, why not support one of your local businesses by paying them a visit, be it a barber, a florist or herbalist! And while you are there, why not ask the owner if he can tell you a little bit about the history of the business, building or area in general. What you find out, share on social media with your local community. For heritage can prove a powerful factor in maintain existing businesses."

"And finally, we come to Sunday, the day of rest. So, you’ve made it through the week, and you’ve completed every well-being goal, well give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it! Often times we may see ourselves as small fish in a vast ocean, and that the things we do hold little to no significance. But this is not so, every little thing we do adds up, and every little thing that's on this list is actively taking steps to not only improve your own well-being but improve the well-being of everybody around you. For Sunday, let’s think about all the work you’ve done this week. Think about all the good that has come from it, and if only ten other people did this, that is still ten times the impact. Write down any activities you enjoyed and any benefits you felt; consider going into next week keeping up with the good work, maybe even share some of your insights on social media. You may just inspire ten more people to do the same!"
