To our incoming and returning students, we can’t wait for you to join us in September. We’ve put together a guide of the top 10 things to do on and around campus, we’ll be introducing you to some of the must-see places that make Carmarthen iconic. Discover your community and town this welcome week!

Gym & Pool

We have a super-friendly gym and pool on campus, make the most of the facilities, pay as you go or take out a membership, befriend a Health & Exercise student and get them to make you a training programme, they’re a handy bunch sometimes.

Find out more.

The SU Building

Come say hi to your SU staff! Sabbatical Officer Becky is always here for a chat and would be happy to answer any questions you might have. Upstairs you’ll find Y Llofft, where you can grab some food, watch sport or sneak in a cheeky game of pool between lectures. There’s also Encore nightclub downstairs which is the perfect place to grab a drink with friends.

Outside stuff!

Carmarthen’s not far from the Brecon Beacons, where you can wander up to Llyn y Fan Fach or Pen y Fan; the town is also on the Coastal Path. Grab yourself an Outdoor Eddie and explore; Wales is unbeatable for outdoor activities.

Great Drinks

There are loads of great pubs right on your doorstep, Y Llofft and Encore provide amazing drinks, so you don’t have to venture far. There are also some great venues off campus such as the Friends Arms, they do a range of local ciders and has repeatedly won CAMRA awards. Notts Bar & Diablo’s are good for some cheeky cocktails, or for something alcohol-free, or visit Yr Atom for some monster milkshakes!

Shopping

Carmarthen’s the oldest town in Wales, but is no slacker in the shopping front. St Catherine’s Walk & Merlin’s Walk have some national chains for the essentials, but check out King Street and Nott Square for some local gems.

Clubs & Societies

A great way to learn new skills, as well as getting to know people outside of your course. The health benefits of getting out of your room and taking a break from studying are also immense. Don’t see anything you fancy? We can also help you start your own.

Check out the groups.

Great Food

Check out Florentino’s, The Warren and Ginger’s for some AMAZING grub. Carmarthen is a foodie’s heaven, from curry to Italian to locally sourced and grown food, many places also offer student discount.

Marchnad!

There’s an indoor market in the town, but on Wednesdays and Saturdays there are outdoor stalls where you can pick up stuff to jazz up your uni rooms for a few quid. There are normally some killer food stalls there too, in case you didn’t fancy cooking for yourself.

Castles

There are a lot of castles all within a stone’s throw of Carmarthen, including one in the town itself. Llansteffan is probably one of the more impressive ones, about 15 mins drive away, but check out Dryslwyn and Dinefwr too.

The Cwad

A Costa on our very own cosy campus! It's the perfect place to revise and meet up with friends after a busy day of lectures. Funnily enough, there’s a queue for coffee on many a Thursday morning…
