UWTSD Karting: Down Pour at PFi BUKC Round 2
On the 16th of February UWTSD Karting participated in Round 2 of the BUKC. The team arrived to a soaked track with lots of heavy rain from the early hours of the morning. The team's morning track walk revealed lots of standing water throughout the circuit so various strategies and racing lines were discussed to maximise the team's race results.
Qualifying
Matt ventured out for his qualifying and in the practice, portion managed P2. Unfortunately, as qualifying came most drivers pushed too hard causing many yellow flags throughout the session. With no clear laps, Matt managed P6.
Alfie’s first round on the team started off promising getting P16 after penalties which was a great result in the tricky wet conditions.
Aeddan went out in his least favourite conditions and managed P18 in the practice portion before pushing too hard in qualifying in turn obtaining multiple penalties for track limits putting him last in P36 to start the race.
Wills Qualifying went well as a dry line has formed he placed P9 in the practice portion and P13 after penalties. The changing conditions made Wills's session rather difficult as the times plummeted over the course of the session.
Races
The track had begun to form a dry line ready for Race 1. Matt's start didn’t go to plan being much faster than those around him resulting in attempting to make a move into hairpin 1 on the wet inside line resulting in a devastating spin dropping back to P13. With lots of time and places to make up, Matt stuck his head down making some great moves back to a P5 finish.
Alfie’s first race was underway and a great start making up a couple of positions through the early conditions to unfortunately getting hit from behind into the first hairpin of lap 1 getting his kart damage which later resulted in him being brought into the pits for a mechanical fault dropping him back. A very unfortunate race to start Alfie’s time in the BUKC but did show a lot of promise with speed.
Aeddan had only one way to go and that was forward starting from the back in P36. Picking off karts one by one over the course of the 25 minute race gained him a whopping 19 positions by the end of the race and after penalties, he finished an impressive P17.
Will was in the final race of the day and as the sun finally appeared and set the track continued to dry, Will battled all race long with many karts to finish P10 on the track
This was overall a great result for the team with P15 overall which beat our goal of finishing in the top 20. This has moved UWTSD Karting from P23 in the championship to P17 so the team hopes to continue to move forward in the championship. Onto Round 3 at GYG.
