Actions for SU
For the Students’ Union to ban business air travel for staff and officers within Great Britain. For there to be a system created to make allowances for air travel on an individual basis based on access needs. For the Chief Executive to be the arbiter of that system (aside from decisions about themselves). For any domestic air travel to be reported back to Students’ Union Council for monitoring purposes.

Progress
Policy has been relayed to staff and officers and train travel arrangements have been made for the NUS conference in Glasgow later this year.

To date no domestic flights have been requested by any staff or officer.

"To keep the climate safe we need drastic cuts in air travel. Efficiency savings such as more direct flights shave off small fractions but are dwarfed by planned growth."

Some air travel is unavoidable, for example for overseas conferences, but when it comes to domestic flights, there really is no excuse. The damaging effects of air travel on our atmosphere and environment are widespread and well documented. I propose to have a ban on domestic UK flights instilled in SU policy, preventing SU representatives, employees and delegates from flying to SU-related events in mainland Britain. Obviously, this ban will not apply to Northern Ireland and other reasonable exceptions.

Alternative modes of transport should be sought, such as train, coach, or lift sharing when travelling to Su events. This will help to reduce the overall carbon footprint of all those associated with the SU and it's operations.

What if this incurred extra costs, for example, hotel stays if having to travel the day before by train/coach? Would you be prepared to pay extra in student fees to cover the extra costs incurred by the university?
