It's no secret that the world is in serious trouble right now. If the uni would declare a climate emergency then we could help to make a difference for our future.

Bristol University has already done this. It's time to make a change and declaring an emergency shows the real urgency of being sustainable.

It's been great to see so many institutions declaring a Climate Emergency in recent months, and I agree wholeheartedly that our University should do the same. I also think that it would be beneficial to attach some hard targets to this declaration, however, to ensure that the University takes progressive action in line with it's values. For example, some years ago UWTSD committed to full divestment from fossil fuels, but they still have 13% of their reserves invested in fossil fuels and fossil fuel infrastructure. Similarly, UWTSDs Carbon Management Policy is currently under review (it expires in 2020) and it would be immensely beneficial to ensure that the targets set by the new Carbon Management Policy are in line with the findings of the most recent IPCC report. That is, to be carbon neutral by 2030. I would like to suggest an amendment to this motion that the University commit to full divestment from fossil fuels within 12 months, and that they commit to being carbon neutral by 2030. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions Jess, I did try to send you a message but couldn't find your email :) Ella
