Keeping the university as a whole a safe institution should be one of the most important factors in everyday life. Efforts should therefore be made to encourage the wider university to engage with the issue of reporting and protecting student safety. If the University could be brought on board/are already making efforts to produce and share their own official reporting procedures, safety information and prevention initiatives, then the local systems in place within the SU’s would be much more effective. The university could then potentially regulate a visible & universal policy across all campuses to make sure that any complaints are dealt with appropriately. There is a general feeling amongst the student population that safety systems offered by the university itself are largely unknown, and that their attitudes toward these incidents aren’t as in-tune with student needs as they could be. In order to remedy this, I suggest that efforts be made to work with the university to encourage the adoption of a universal, clear reporting and support system for the victims of incidents such as harassment, assault, hate crimes etc. and to bridge the gap in communication between students and institution.
