Quiet Blocks/Halls

Some universities already have this process, but this idea is essentially for the SU to work with the university to better match like-minded people together in accommodation.

This idea is largely due to feedback from students within the SoCom Group (social and communication support group) across campuses, where there have been cases of more introvert students in the same flats as more outgoing students, meaning they have sometimes felt intimidated or anxious, through nobody’s fault other than circumstance.

In Carmarthen and Lampeter, this issue may be easier to resolve due to the amount of accommodation on campus and layout of student accommodation – however with the move to SA1 in Swansea, this may take a different shape and involve working with more partners internally within UWTSD & externally (i.e local authority and private halls providers).

This idea submits that the Students’ Union should:

  • Lobby/work with the university to develop a process whereby students can identify themselves wanting ‘quiet halls’ upon applying for accommodation – across all sites.
  • Lobby/work with the university to identify suitable areas for ‘quiet halls’ across all sites (including Swansea) and support with implementation.
  • Be engaged with the addition and development of ‘quiet halls’ within existing accommodation, and review/be involved within a review process to ensure a successful outcome post-implementation.
  • Liaise with relevant Part Time Officers and partners across sites to ensure currency and relevance.
