There are two parts to this petition, both of which focus on wastage during the recent SU elections. One part focuses on the monetary expenses of the elections, the other part of the environmental expense. The aim of this motion is to reduce waste (both monetary and environmental) during any further elections the Students union holds.

  1. I feel we can all agree that the sheer amount of pizza offered during elections was excessive. While we are all students and enjoy free food, having free pizza daily (on one campus or another) is a great expense that we simply cannot afford. Often this food went to waste or was consumed only by the same group of students, it was not reaching the wider demographic it has been intended for.
  2. While Domino’s pizza may have been accessible in Carmarthen and Swansea, for Domino’s to have been brought all the way to Lampeter was a very excessive measure with damning environmental costs. We have many local establishments from whom pizza could have been purchased, but instead a special delivery was made from Aberystwyth. For an institution claiming to be green this is inexcusable.
  3. PAPER, PAPER EVERYWHERE!!! While the sheer amount of paper is not only expensive for the SU to be providing, but the number of trees that must have been cut down just for you to see candidates faces over and over does not bare to think about. You may not all be aware but candidates (for SABB positions) were allowed to request up to 100 sheets of A3, there were a further A4 sheets available. Many of the students who were running in the SABB elections will agree with me that we did not request the 100 A4 sheets that were provided. This sheer waste of paper was upsetting to say the least. This isn’t taking into consideration the amount of paper those running for PTO positions received, again without requesting them and most going un used.

The council resolves to:

  1. Reduce the amount spend on free food during elections and look for local businesses where said food can be purchased from.
  2. Not provide candidates with manifesto’s and other printed materials that they have not expressly asked for.
  3. Reduce the allowance of paper for all candidates, with the council to agree on exact figures.
  4. To look at all other areas of elections to ensure that they run as efficiently as possible and to ensure that the democracy of one week does not last beyond our own lifetimes.
