On May the 4th the world is usually talking about Star Wars the epic space opera... but this year on May the 4th part-time officer (PTO) Anna Holland was out and about on Carmarthen campus, talking about a different kind of space.
In their role as LGBT+ PTO, Anna wanted to help create LGBTQ+ Safe Spaces. Through meetings with the Student Voice team, Anna came up with an idea to distribute “LGBTQ+ Safe Space” and “Proud Ally” stickers on the Carmarthen campus. Stickers were to be a colourful reminder that the campus is inclusive and that various places/people on the campus are there to offer support and signpost students to the right place if they ever feel worried or unsafe on campus because they are part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Locations such as the main reception desk, the café in the Cwad, the stationery shop and the IT desk can be seen displaying a sticker to show support, and will direct any student in need to the Students’ Union, Student Services or wherever is most appropriate. A few lecturers have put a sticker on their classroom door and some academic staff who travel around campuses have displayed a sticker on their laptops. Anna spoke to students passing through the Cwad and gave them the “Proud Ally” stickers to display on their laptops, in the hopes that any staff and students from the LGBTQ+ community would see these displayed on their peers' laptops and feel safe and comfortable being their true selves.
Comment from Anna - “I am really grateful to the students’ union for supporting me in carrying out my idea. Seeing it come to life has been really exciting.”
We loved Anna’s initiative, and the students Anna spoke to said they liked their idea too! If you would like to see these stickers on your campus, please get in touch with Student Voice.
