Sports clubs and societies can have a huge impact on your student experience. They bring life to campus, give you the opportunity to meet amazing people, and provide a balance with academic work that can help with your studies.
Each year, some of our groups don’t manage to elect a committee. This means there is no one to lead the group, run activity, or organise opportunities. These groups get moved into our Lead a Group programme. The groups are fully set up, often with money in their accounts, ready for students to come along, pick them up, and start running them.
So why not start running one of these groups today! You can do by following these easy steps!
Let Us Know You're Interested
· If you want to revive a group, register your interest on the SU website by completing the Microsoft Form linked to ‘I want to lead a group!’
· If other students have shown interest for the same group, we’ll put you in contact can discuss together.
Chat with the Student Opportunities Coordinator (SOC)
· The Campus SOC will get in touch to guide you through the process of restarting the group.
Complete Lead a Group Microsoft Form
· Students must fill out the Microsoft Form
· This form asks for details like:
o Your ideas for restarting the group
o What you’d like the membership price to be
o Financial plans for running the group
Feedback Meeting with the Campus SOC
· You’ll meet with the SOC to go over your ideas and get advice on any changes or improvements. The SOC will arrange this meeting.
Approval Process
· Once you’ve made any necessary tweaks, your plan goes to the Students' Union Executive Team for review and approval.
Complete the Core Documents
· If approved, the group must complete the following core documents:
o Constitution (the group's official rulebook)
o Risk Assessment for regular/general activity
o Budget Forecast (predicted financial plan)
· Reach out to your Campus SOC for support with these documents if you need.
Promotion and recruitment for your new Student Group
· After core documents are approved:
o Your group will be added to the SU website ready for students to sign up as members!
o You can start promoting and organising Pop-Ups and Taster sessions to attract new members.
Start Running Activities
· Once membership prices are set and your webpage is live, your group is officially up and running!
Financial Support (if needed)
· If your group’s funds are under £50, you can apply for a £50 Lead A Group Grant to help with advertising and promo materials.
· The grant needs to be used within three months.
Following these steps ensures that a student group successfully transitions out of the Lead A Group Programme and becomes fully operational again within the Students' Union.
