Jobs for Students Charter

This employability charter sets out clear standards which both the companies and student must follow in order to allow for the best working environment for all. The ability to hire or
work for one of these companies allows for mutual growth. This charter is based on principles and is not a formal policy of UWTSD Students' Union.

Expectations of Businesses

  • A healthy and safe working environment, appropriate risk assessments, and Public Liability insurance in place.
  • Provide a full Staff introduction including review of all the companies’ policies and procedures.
  • Provide full contract stating the terms and conditions of employment.
  • Students will not be expected to work more than 15 hours per week, (or less depending upon international students’ status).
  • Ongoing training to allow for students to do their job to the required standard.
  • Provide statutory training as a minimum to do their role.
  • Where possible provide opportunities for extra skills and qualifications for students.
  • Mangers and supervisors will have an open and honest professional relationship with students and will always treat employers with respect.
  • Continuously supporting students when they have a problem with the job and helping to resolve any workplace issues promptly
  • Provide regular support and supervision sessions to allow the student to develop.
  • Be mindful that students do have times when they need to hand in assignments or study and not to put undue pressure on them to work during these times if you are notified in advance.
  • To be flexible of scheduling working around student assessment periods.
  • A work environment which has any form of harassment, bullying and discrimination will not be tolerated.
  • The workplace should be inclusive and proactively champion equality, diversity and inclusivity.
  • All employees must be paid the UK national living wage.
  • The company must be environmentally sustainable and ethical sources materials.
  • The company must be a registered company.
  • Payments must be undertaken through a payroll software and not ‘cash in hand’ 

Expectations of Students

  • You turn up on time ready for work in a positive and energised way
  • You must be honest and respectful of others at all times
  • Follow laid out procedures, e.g., health and safety when they are available
  • You must keep up today with the needs of your job by attending training provided.
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK and must be honest with employers about any other roles, especially if on a particular visa
  • All international student employees should seek confirmation from the university’s international registry team to confirm their eligibility to work and maximum number of hours before undertaking any paid work.
  • Providing staff members with timetabling and assessment deadlines.

UWTSD Students' Union reserves the right to undertake audits and spot checks on employees and companies (at short notice). This is to make sure that the UWTSD Students' Union Employability charter is being followed.
