Handover is when a group's outgoing committee prepare new committee members to take on their role.
It is the outgoing committee’s responsibility to decide how the handover will be conducted. We recommend you start by using our template to create a written handover document.
You should also think about:
- Having new committee members shadow the outgoing team.
- Scheduling a one-on-one meeting with the person taking over from you.
- Organise a social for both committees.
- Introducing new members to important contacts e.g. SU staff

Handover Do’s and Don’ts
- Do customise. Your successors' current involvement and level of experience should dictate how in-depth the handover process should be.
- Do let them get on with it. Expect your successor to make changes you may not approve of; don’t interfere and let them get on with it.
- Do ask for help if you need it. SU staff are available to help you through handover; we’d rather help you deliver an effective handover than be left with a new exec that’s underprepared.
- Don’t leave it until the last minute. Take the time to plan your handover.
- Don’t disappear once it’s over. Make sure to pass on your contact details just in case any questions pop up.
- Don’t panic. Handovers can be stressful but with good planning and a bit of patience, you’ll be fine.
