Student Voice Coordinator: Birmingham

The Student Voice Co-ordinator: Birmingham ensures that all students representatives (Course Reps and Student Voice Reps) as well as Part-Time Officers at the Birmingham Campuses are supported to champion the student voice whilst also providing direct support to students who need help with university regulations. This role also supports all our Sabbatical Officers with their student engagement work. 

This post highlights the things that are positive about the university experience and the areas of improvement. University can be challenging; the Student Voice Coordinator is there to enhance the student experience through specialist advice, signposting, and empowerment.

£24,338

Contract

Full-time, Permanent: Permanent contract at 35 hours per week.

Hours

35 hours per week, with 1-2 weekend days per month, agreed with the Student Voice Manager. Weekend days will be in lieu of a week day for that specific week. 

Location

This role is expected to work primarily at the Quay Place and Sparkhill campuses in Birmingham, with occasional travel to other campuses as required.

Student Voice

  1. Coordinate, develop and administer Student Voice activity within the Students’ Union (Academic Representation, Democratic processes, and Students’ Union Research)
  2. Work closely with elected officers, students, the wider SU team, and University staff to support and develop both the academic representative system as well as the union’s wider democratic processes
  3. Ensure that the Student Voice is used to enhance the student academic experience through effective opportunities for students to express their views and be actively engaged in decision-making processes in their Schools and the wider University  

Duties of the Student Voice Coordinator: Birmingham

  1. Democracy

    1. Promote and support Student Voice initiatives, including providing spaces which allow for generating student engagement and ideas.
    2. Manage student forums, representative meetings, and support the Students’ Union’s Annual General Meeting.
    3. Act as an Assistant Deputy Returning Officer to deliver successful elections.
    4. To be the operational support for the sabbatical officer president for Birmingham & London in them achieving their manifesto and objectives.
  2. Academic Representation

    1. Co-ordinate the advertisement, election, and training of UWTSD Course and Student Voice Representatives.
    2. Support reps in preparing for meetings, helping them to identify both issues and good practice within Schools and Institutes.
    3. Manage and maintain an accurate database of reps, reporting annually on the demographics of participating students creating a plan of action as to how to remove barriers to participation.
    4. Develop and manage stakeholder relationships at all levels of the university to support reps to achieve their objectives.
    5. Monitor the impact of the student voice at School and Institute-level meetings, reporting on trends and outcomes of issues raised by reps across the University, and contributing to engagement improvements through feedback, helping to close the feedback loop when appropriate.
    6. Assist in the promotion of the full range of annual online sector and institutional student feedback surveys.
    7. Support the creation of the Annual Quality Report from research design to data collection and analysis and finally reporting.
    8. Inducting and raising awareness/understanding of the Students’ Union and its services to those within the Institute of Inner-City Learning (Union pop-ups, collaborating with other Union departments, etc.).
    9. Contribute to an annual programme of events and support including the potential for an Annual Representation Conference.

 

General Duties

  • To support, advise, and assist elected student officers, both Sabbatical Officers and Part-Time Officers, in the achievement of their aims and objectives
  • To maintain a local Democracy and Representation engagement calendar. • To run insight surveys and/or post-forum and campaign debriefs where applicable
  • To discharge all relevant Health and Safety Responsibilities
  • To adhere to all relevant Students’ Union Policies and Procedures
  • To adhere to all relevant UWTSD Policies and Procedures
  • To be adaptable to change and have an ability to acquire new and relevant skills and knowledge by taking appropriate responsibility for own personal and professional development
  • To build and maintain trusting, supportive relationships with students and University stakeholders
  • To represent the Students’ Union at relevant professional networks, events and conferences
  • To support and promote the Students’ Union’s values whilst undertaking duties, demonstrating commitments to equality, bilingualism, sustainability, and democracy
