Speed Friending Event Proposal
Starting university can be an exciting but also overwhelming experience, especially when it comes to meeting new people and building friendships. To help students connect in a relaxed and structured way, I propose organising a “Speed Friending” event in Swansea.
Speed friending is a social activity inspired by speed dating, but designed purely for making friends. Participants are paired up for short, timed conversation typically lasting 3 to 5 minutes before rotating to meet someone new. This format allows students to interact with a wide range of people in a short period of time, reducing the pressure and awkwardness often associated with starting conversations.
The event would include simple conversation prompts to help break the ice, such as favourite hobbies, travel experiences or personal interests. These prompts encourage natural and engaging discussions, making it easier for students to find common ground. The atmosphere would be informal and welcoming, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable participating regardless of their personality or background.
This initiative would be especially beneficial for first-year students, international students, and anyone looking to expand their social circle. It promotes inclusivity, confidence, and a sense of belonging within the university community.
In addition to helping students form new friendships, speed friending can contribute positively to student wellbeing by reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. It is a low-cost, easy-to-organise event that can have a meaningful impact on campus life.
Overall, speed friending is a simple yet effective way to bring students together, encourage interaction, and build a stronger, more connected university community.
